A model fine-tuned specifically for conversation (multi-turn chat) rather than single text completion. Most modern LLMs are chat models.
📋 Concrete Example
Base model: completes text (‘The capital of France is’ -> ‘Paris, which is known for…’). Chat model: responds to messages (User: ‘What is the capital of France?’ -> Paris).
🔗 Analogy
A debate club member vs a public speaker - the public speaker gives monologues (base model). The debater responds to opponents in a back-and-forth (chat model). Chat models are trained for dialogue.
